Sami Häkkinen, Account Director
There is definitely room online for a good site to activate the hobby community – SK has the potential to become just that.
The brief
To develop a community-oriented web service to complement Suuri käsityö magazine’s revamped look and feel. Aims included user activation, allowing people to show off and discuss their own projects, and creating a focal point online for handicrafts enthusiasts.
What we delivered
A smooth, elegant facelift for the site, providing new functionality designed to transform Suuri käsityö into a hub for the Finnish handicrafts community. As the hobby is a popular topic for bloggers, we also included a blog aggregation section to focus these diverse voices in a single location. All told, we provided the concept, visual design and implementation.
The results
The renewed site has been well received by its target audience, with traffic increasing by over 100%. Even before the site was promoted in the magazine, over 400 users had registered to take part in discussions, contribute photos and info on their own handiwork, and buy and sell finished items.
Next steps
The community features will be developed even further. Ideas include enabling users to pool their efforts, selling or auctioning their pieces to raise money for charity. We also plan to deepen the ongoing collaboration with Finland’s highly active handicrafts bloggers.
